How Much Pain Killer Can I Take?

Pain and discomfort are certainly the two of the most common reasons people seek health care.
When the pain or discomfort become too intense, we call the doctor or go to the emergency room.
But the question arises: How much pain killer can I take before there is no further benefit in taking a larger dose or taking it more frequently?
Here are some guidelines:
- Tylenol (Acetaminophen)–Usual dose is 325mg to 1000mg every 4 to 6 hours with a limit of 4000mg per 24 hours. The dose at which there seems to be no additional pain relief is 1000mg.
- Motrin or Aleve (Ibuprofen)–The dose at which there seem to be no additional pain relief is 400mg/dose or 1200mg per day. However, Ibuprofen has anti-inflammatory qualities that 2400mg/day seems to help without additional pain relief.
Hopefully this helps you understand your OTC pain killers a little better.
