How many drug courses does my Dr. get in med-school?
People often ask me how much education does a doctor get in drugs. Well, it varies….see in most medical schools there is usually only one course in “Pharmacology”—the study of how drugs work in the body.
Here’s one example: Medical School Curriculum
Another example: Med School Curriculum Interestingly—there is only one course in Nutrition.
Your pharmacist, on the other-hand, spends 4 years studying drugs, their uses, their contraindications, their side effects, etc. No Comparison!!!
However, many doctors, especially specialists, have 4 to 6 drugs that they use all the time with their patients. They’ll probably know more about those specific drugs than the pharmacist. The difference is that the Pharmacist has the ability to review the literature on those drugs and become the expert in just a short while.
I can’t stress strongly enough that it is YOUR PHARMACIST that needs to be your medication guide!!
